OLIVIA RODRIGO

Breif history and acheivements:

Olivia Rodrigo started her career in in roles on Disney’s ‘Bizaardvark’ and ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’. This gives us our first clue to her target audience and links her career to Miley Cyrus (who was known for her Disney Channel show as Hannah Montana before switching to an edgier and more provocative persona with hit song "Wrecking Ball")

Olivia Rodrigo is born in 2003 (21 years old), she signed with Geffen Records (a subsidiary of Interscope Records Inc.) in 2021. She then released her first single "Driver's License" which topped charts internationally.

Interscope Records, is also a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, which is a key figure in the music industry as it is part of the Big 3 music conglomerates. Notable for signing major talents like Eminem and 5 Seconds of Summer and Billie Eilish.

Rodrigo's record is very impressive, her debut single won Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards and was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Despite only having 2 full studio albums which is very few for her genre (given her career has only just begun) Olivia Rodrigo has many musical achievements already.

MEDIA APPEARANCES:

Acceptance speech for the 2023 Kids Choice Awards:

This recent award shows that despite her rebrand to an edgier persona she is still very important to a female 15-24 audience who grew up watching her on Disney Channel.

Vogue 73 Questions:

In contrast this Vogue interview appeals to a slightly older audience.

We see the use of candles to create a diegetic title to promote her album GUTS, this is both playful and visually pleasing.

Olivia Rodrigo has a clear visual "stamp" (Goodwin's conventions), she uses this light shade of purple in all her products, its important to her brand. She also uses a monospaced font in lower case for all text, notice there is also the recurring image of torn paper. She also uses the butterfly as her symbol and logo:

In this lyric video we can see the purple visual stamp as well as the monospaced font, she expertly uses rings with purple gemstones in the shapes of letters to spell out the name of her album. This diegetic title is likely something we're likely to incorporate in our products.
