A Journey Begins

IN THIS POST:

  • Initial blogging on intertextuality (summer holiday work)

Intertextuality research over holidays

Intertextuality is a postmodern term coined by Kristeva to explain when media texts make references to each other, it is especially pertinent in music videos, often referencing film or other iconic music videos.

Here are examples that immediately came to mind:

Kill Bill by SZA - Christian Breslauer 2022

The clip uses iconic scenes from the cult classic Kill Bill directed by Quintin Tarantino, it is a simulacrum of the film.

Similar editing techniques are used, even an animated sequence as done in the film.

Another example of this cult film being referenced in pop culture is in

Telephone by Lady Gaga and Beyonce - Jonas Åkerlund 2010

In addition, to Kill Bill, this video references Pulp Fiction, another Tarantino classic. The diner setting as well as the "honey" pet names are clear references to the film.

This same video is represented in another pop video from a more recent artist:

INDUSTRY BABY by Lil Nas X (ft. Jack Harlow) - Christian Breslauer 2021

This video had two major references I picked up on:

And the many The Shawshank Redemption signifiers:

(This video can be used when talking about post-feminism, and queer representation)

Bruno Mars and Depeche Mode
